At Christ the Teacher Catholic School, the entire community is committed to the goal of educating saints and scholars. Even our youngest students are active members of the school, participating in everything from liturgies and prayer services to piano lessons and sports. Students receive daily instruction in religion, math, reading, language arts, science and social studies. Students also attend weekly Spanish, art, music, physical education, library, and technology classes.
Instruction is provided in a variety of ways including whole group, small groups, centers, modeling the scaffolded instruction model of “I do, we do, you do,” and individualized support. Hands-on activities, dramatic play, family projects, service learning, and the incorporation of music and art make for a well-rounded learning experience. Catholic values and prayer are woven into all areas of study, helping students to grow in their faith. Technology is also incorporated into the curriculum through the use of Smart Boards, document cameras, interactive website and educational apps.
Topics of Study, Special Programs, and Traditions for Grades Pre-K to 2 include:
Pre-Kindergarten:
- Recognition of letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and name
- Learning to form letters and print
- Community-based field trips (police station, grocery store, Home Depot, etc…)
- Use of the Smart Table and iPads
- Learn Bible verses and Bible stories of great heroes
- Nativity Play and end-of-year closing program
- Pre-K 3 trip to the Delaware Children’s Museum
- Pre-K 4 trip to the Delaware Museum of Natural History
Kindergarten:
- Developing number sense and reading comprehension skills
- Applying decoding skills and word analysis
- Trip to the Delaware Solid Waste Authority Recycling Center
- In-house field trips by Otto the AAA Safety Car, Delaware Aero-Space Education Center, and the Franklin Institute)
- Learn to respect life and all of God’s gifts
- 100th Day of School celebration that includes dressing as a 100-year-old
- Celebrations of liturgical seasons, Holy Days, and feast days
- Monthly family projects that strengthen the home and school connection
First Grade:
- More active participation in Mass through the learning of responses and additional prayers
- Working towards grade-appropriate reading fluency
- Making crafts related to curriculum lessons
- Dressing up as a favorite storybook character for Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’s birthday
- Homemade butter making project for a Thanksgiving Then and Now project
- A spring field trip to Bellevue State Park
- In-house field trip to support various STEM concepts
Second Grade:
- Age-appropriate understanding of sacraments and the liturgical year
- Learn cursive writing
- Preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion
- Celebration of the First Communicants and the May Crowning of Mary
- Hands-on science experiments and in-house STEM-related field trips
- Field trip to the Delaware Museum of Natural History
- Learning to be “Bucket Fillers” who share kindness and respect
